Copying files to My Cloud and Mac restarts!

Hi there,

Have my WD My Cloud all set up and I’m trying to copy my files over. After a few folders my Mac suddenly freezes then restarts. Any ideas what is happenign and how I can prevent this? I wanted the storage to back up important files but I’m scared to carry on in case something happens to the hard drive I’m copying from. Here is the problem report:

What were you using to copy the files over?

Finder?

WD App?

That suggests the Apple AFP file system is the culprit.

What’s that in ElCap/Sierra terms?

Okay: ElCap 10.11.6 something…

Panics not rare with NAS devices, it would seem:

https://www.google.co.uk/search?safe=active&dcr=0&q=macos+afp+panic+nas

Have you updated the MyCloud firmware?

Thanks so much for replying. No, I haven’t! Any links to help me work out how to do that?

I was using Finder

It may have updated itself automatically.

If you have found the Dashboard, it will tell you the firmware version on the home page.

I would recommend the ‘manual update’ method; a bit more complicated, but a bit safer, since you download the firmware file first, and then install it from a local location; therefore not interrupted by issues with your internet link whilst it’s updating.

Since it looks like it’s AFP that’s crashing, you could try connecting using the SMB protocol instead:

Thank you, I’ll try that.

Yeah, those things are junk. If you have a fast internet connection, just use iCloud… As a bonus, it also syncs seamlessly with you iPhone,  Watch, iPad, AirPods and everything else Apple.

Why waste your time tinkering with an unreliable so-called “cloud” that even FormaFist called “the worst piece of junk ever” when you can use a real cloud that you can access anywhere, never crashes and never needs maintenance?
