I have a 5 1/2 year old WD 2 tb easystore external drive. I have been experiencing no problems with it, but just out of curiosity–wondering if I should replace it–I installed & ran the WD utility for diagnostics. The first two programs (check status & quick drive test) finished in a few seconds. The third one, the complete drive test, went up to 90% in several hours (say, 8 or so), but has been stuck at 90% for 6-8 hours. Should I just hit the Cancel button and restart the test? Or is that a sign that the program has found a problem with the hard drive?
The test being stuck at 90% could be a slow spot on the drive or a software issue. Since the quick tests passed, the drive is probably fine. You can cancel and restart the test. If it keeps happening, back up your data just in case. There’s no need to replace it yet.
I suppose the data is fine… And I agree probably not a reason to replace it.
I also ran CrystalDisk Info, and it gave the overall status of the disk as Healthy. I see the WD Diagnostics app has a test (one of the first two) that mentioned something about the SMART status of the disk. Does that mean that that WD diagnostics app test is the same as the Crystaldisk test? Or would they be two different tests?
I sent an email to customer service. Looks like the drive is still good. Below is the reply:

If the WD Complete Drive Test is stuck at 90% for 6–8 hours, it likely indicates a problem with the drive, such as failing sectors. Don’t cancel immediately, but if it’s still stuck after 24 hours, stop the test. Back up your data right away, check SMART data using tools like CrystalDiskInfo, and consider replacing the drive since it’s over 5 years old.
a) Long time running tests, they are not valid if the PC it is not supported by a uninterruptible power supply = UPS = constant AC power supply.
b) The PC must be fresh booted, and no one should cause any vibrations at the testing setup.
