I’ve been reading that you can connect up to 25 PCs to this WDSentinel DX4000 and that it’s works with Windows XP, Vista, 7 and Macs. I haven’t see anywhere that you can connect it to a Windows 2008 R2 Server for backups. Does anyone know?
Also, can I back up WDSentinel DX4000 to USB External Drives?
Hi, Windows 2008 R2 Server is not supported, you can check that on the manual or on the sentinel overview page. For the second question, yes you can backup the files to an external USB hard drive, but the Sentinel does not have an automatic option for this.
To backup your files to an USB drive you may login to the Sentinel using Remote Desktop Connection, and use Windows Backup or a third party backup software.
If you have the 4/2tb model you can use windows server backup to backup the entire box to an external 2tb usb drive. If you have the 8/6tb model you are out of luck as WSB is limited to 2tb.
That said, I have no earthly clue how you would do a Bare Metal Restore from a headless box.
You *can* connect server 2008 R2 boxes. When you run the connector install you will get a warning all features may not be supported. This is the CYA as MS has no clue what 3rd party apps you may be running on the server and they may or may not be properly backed up with the provided VSS writers.
And with that said, Server 08 R2 has Windows Server Backup which does a good job of backing itself up. Going with the belt and suspenders option that you can’t have too many backups, add your server
