Hello,
I have the same common problem like many here, my 2TB my book would no longer show in “my computer” window.
I decided to format it, using the “WD_Quick_Formatter_Win_1_2_0_10”
I got an error - “WD external drive format failed.”
PLEASE HELP…

Try formatting the drive with Windows, instead of using the Quick Formatter: How to partition and format a WD drive on Windows (7, Vista, XP) and Mac OSX
If you still cannot reformat, you may try writing zeroes to it, then reformat: How to low level format or write zeros (full erase) to a WD hard drive or Solid State drive
