I have been needing to backup all the data that I have on my 16TB Cloud EX4. I have tried the following and failed.
- Attached a newly formatted USB drive. After some time, the Cloud EX4 locks up and the only way to bring it back to life is to unplug it. This feature is useless. I have tried doing this process various times and have failed.
- I have tried copying the data off to my computer and that fails as well. Some files fail to copy down and errors out. I can access the file, photos, without any problems.
I am about quit on this device, and find another solution and attempt to move all the data onto a non-WD device.
Does anyone have any suggestions? WD Support, any suggestions? I seriously need to backup all this data.

Hi,
What’s the firmware version installed on your My Cloud EX4, and did you perform a system only restore on it?
It is at the current version 2.11.164.
I have had this problem as well, ever since I bought my EX4 in 2014.
The issue is a Chicken-and-Egg situation: We are instructed to always perform a full backup before updating the firmware. We are also told that if the backup always fails, we should update our firmware. How do you safely perform a firmware update when the highly recommended full-backup-before-updating never successfully completes? Notice in this thread that the OP currently has the most recent firmware installed, and for the last 3 months nobody has offered a solution to our problem. Notice also that the OP has already tried the work-arounds offered by forum responses in other threads, as have I. Hopefully a solution will be brought forth soon.
