Apple OS Mountain Lion and My Book Live

Well, I hope that this post will help those that are thinking of buying MyBook Live for MAC. If you are current with your OS that is to say you are using the latest version of OS "Mountain Lion’, the firmware and other supporting software from WD DOES NOT WORK. I purchased the drive followed the instructions and nothing buy ERROR messages.

So then I wasted a 1/2 hour on the support line waiting to get connected and once I did I asked the simple question does WD My Book Live support the latest version of MAC OS? The person I spoke with was trying to be very helpful but was a tad hard to understand, offshore support I am certain. Nevertheless, he did try and I wish he would not have as all it did was prolonged the end outcome and that is the fact that WD has not updated their FIRMWARE and as a result the software does not work. It is a shame as it looks like a good product the hardware that is too bad the software developers at WD have not made it work yet with Mountain Lion.

All said and dine, my Book live is making a trip back to COSTCO tomorrow for a refund and in the mean time I will stay with the 16GB Kingston WiDrive that works perfect with Mountain Lion OS.

Cheers!

Michael

What type of problems were you having?

Nothing worked on the web connection via Quick View… Setting password,  creating users any action would generate a SYSTEM ERROR MESSAGE 30500 for example. The Quasi-Tech guy stated that the firmware is still from 2011 and thus does not work with OS X Mountain Lion.

Cheers!

M

My Book Live also does not work with Apple OS Lion.  I have tried repeatedly to find someone at WD who understands the problem.  No success.  I will be returning my drives. Good bye to WD.

This isn’t an accurate statement and I want to comment on the rest of this thread. Our support team has PM’d the users having trouble on this thread in order to offer further assistance.

WD Quickview for Mac – the version on the CD does not install on Mountain Lion.  This issue was identified due, and resolved.  There is a KBA about this issue and we posted to the WD Support Download site a standalone WDQV for Mac Installer v 2.2.0.5.  Here is actual symptom if the user ran the CD (the CD is being phased out).

  1. User on Mac will get the welcome screen when he runs the CD onboarder
  2. Advances to step3 to install WDQV
  3. After a slight pause, the user will get to the next screen that says the WDQV was installed successfully.  (However, WDQV is never installed and there is no error message to indicate this.  The user would not see the WDQV icon on the top menu tray)

We conducted extensive testing on Mtn Lion on the beta and the RTM versions.  We know that current public available fw 02.11.09-053 works with TimeMachine just fine and we updated to netatalk 2.2.3.

Hi there,

Im having a similar problem, and have not yet head back from WD support.

I have the latest mac book pro which came installed with Lion. I upgarded to Mountain Lion (latest version). I have a 2tb MBL.

MBL was recognised and works no problem. I downloaded the latest version of QuickView from the WD website but it does not work properly.

At first it appeared in the Mac title bar, but OPEN was greyed out. When i tried to click DASHBOARD it showed the opening screen with SETTINGS, SHARES, etc but it doesn´t let me chose one of the options, it just hangs a bit then remains on the same page. None of the menu items actually work.

Then after i shut the machine down and restarted the next day. QV had disappeared. So i re-installed, but now when i try to open DASHBOARD it says “cannot conect to server…” in Safari.

So at the moment, i cannot upgrade to latest MBL firmware version, nor can i properly protect the drive with username and password, or sort out shares etc.

Pls can someone advise?

I just wanted to say that I bought my 2 TB MBL after having installed Mountain Lion, and there has been no problems installing or using Quick View, the web UI, the apps on the drive or the CD.

So the claim that it doesn’t work isn’t correct.

Hi, how do you get quick view to work with mountain lion? I used to have it on lion b4 i upgraded to mountain lion. Since the upgrade, i noticed that it disappeared from my mac. I attempted to re-download it but it says it is unable to.

to add on, even b4 the OS upgrade, i could never get the quick view icon to appear in my system tray.

this is so tiring.

How? I installed it. What do you mean “it says it is unable to”? You can’t download it, or you can’t install it?

i can download quick view. but i can’t install it. I get the error message that i’m unable to install it because i’m on os x mountain lion.

I bought the MyBook Live 2TB yesterday, connected it to my network and then wondered how I could load the CD to do the installation as I have a MacBook Air with Mountain Lion & no drive.  However,  I didn’t have to worry; Finder found MyBook Live and I saw in amongst the files in the Public share>Software a .dmg file.  Opening (i.e. clicking on) this did the trick and I got the start up.

In no time I did the Discovery, followed the instruction in the manual (also in the Public share - logged on as Guest) and had set up Time Machine to do a backup.  It ran overnight and fully backed up my machine…Great.

One thing I did discover - don’t change access on the TimeMachine share after it is set up (e.g. from Public access to Named User) - it causes problems.

So I am happy - this is a much better solution than my ‘hand cranked’ adaptaion to get TimeMachine to work on my Buffalo Linksation when using Snow Leopard (i.e. using Terminal & setting up sparesbundles etc).  Mountain Lion does not allow that sort of thing.

I also note that many of the Apple staff here in the UK aren’t sure if TimeMachine will work with NAS drives - well it worked for me.  Thank you WD

This drive works perfectly fine with mountain lion as it has with the os before that. The software provided by WD is absolutely optional and is not needed nor does it provide any additional functionality. Please refrain from misinforming other people just because you personally couldn’t get it to work.

I am running OS X 10.8.2 on an iMac and a Macbook Pro. I received my MyBook Live 1TB today, and after downloading the latest version of the Qucikview setup app, I was able to install Quickview.  (2.2.0.5)

I am not interested in setting my drive up for Time Machine. I just want to load all of my media onto it for streaming. However, when I click on the Quick View icon up in the menu bar at the top, ‘Open’ is greyed out. There is a green light icon next to the name of the drive.

‘Dashboard’, ‘Learning Centre’, ‘Shut Down’, ‘Alerts’ and ‘Properties’ are in black. However when I click on Dashboard, Safari opens, but no page loads, it just hangs. The same happens when I click ‘Learning Centre’

Below the list of options in the drop down menu, the serial number is visable, but the space available, temperaturer and SMART stutus are all listed as unknow.  When I click ‘Properties’ a few pieces of information appear, but the capacity is missing, as well as the firmware revision.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, otherwise this will be getting returned at the nearest possible opportunity.

Cheers,

Russell

You don’t need to install the wd software. In your browser type:

http://mybooklive.local/UI/login

from there you can configure and admin your drive
