I have a 5 TB WD Passport USB HD fairly recent purchase, with the diagonal seamed glued case, it was disconnected during file transfer without ejecting (a big no-no, I know, but who of us not from a tech savvy background knew the ramifications?) and now when plugging in it freezes up the PCs. I have managed to get around that through adjusting the power settings (on a Windows 10 64 Bit updated 13AUG25 but have access to Linux as well). Plugged into Windows it shows up in File Explorer but freezes File Explorer, if I try to right click on the drive I just get the Windows Wheel of Windows Sux Idiocy for infinite time period. When plugged in the disk just keeps scratching like a DJ scratching records (as in, twitching back and forth, like the initial plug and play check).
A) Is there a way to stop this, as it seems like that is part of why she won’t play with windows?
In Device Manager there is a ! saying no driver but I search WD web for the driver and WD says plug and play, no driver required (somebody should have told windows)
In computer management disk management WD HD doesn’t show up, try to rescan, and it freezes it.
Have installed WD Discovery & WD Drive Utilities both those software were installed 13AUG25 uninstalled and reinstalled. Seem to be working although need to wait a fair time period before HD is recognised. In Diagnose SMART Status passed Quick Drive Test passed. Am running a Complete Drive Test but only just started and quick search indicates over one hour per TB, stall at 90% if bad sectors, and the disk has only 9% free so I might be here for a long time. Time will tell (ha ha)
Doesn’t show in Total Commander, trying to select the drive and it freezes, not responding. Shows in TestDisk but then scan (very slow) indicating all sectors scanned are bad.
When I try to do CHKDSK from Command Prompt in Admin Mode it just says please wait with the flashing _ so nothing happening.
As you can gather, I know my way around a keyboard but I don’t have a degree in Information Technology, search engines between google, bing and duckduckgo are generally a source of frustration as the first four answers are for paid software, as are most of the videos from paid software companies, the remainder of the first 10 pages are generally thanks to the search engine being very selective with which terms they’ve applied to the search, but hey, those problems have been around since google existed and became billionaires, and as long as microsoft and apple became billionaires on their super yachts paying a team of overpriced lawyers and accountants to ensure they pay zero tax and farming out all their labor to Developing nations for a bowl of rice a day.
Appreciate greatly any links to other posts that answer any of my questions, or tips and advice to try, info on other websites, software to try, etc. Apologies for premature posting before complete scan finished, but I figure I can update later. Thanks!
