20 years of work possibly gone

Hi

my name is Patrick and i think i may have lost 20 years of photographs and videos i have put together down throught the years. I bought a 1 TB WD external hardrive manufactured 2nd of August 2011. WD10EARS

I have tried everything possible with the execption of removing the pcb. No communication between my laptop and this drive. Just a blinking light on the drive to remind me that i should have backed it up. Even buying an all in one HDD docking station from china made no difference. Plugging this unit into my usb 3 just killed the all in one and when i removed this drive from the docking station it came back to life. I am surprised at the amount of reports here on hardrives leading me to think i may have made a mistake on my purchase.

There are no discs spinning at all so i was going to suggest buying some sata usb leads from ebay considering the bad news on alot of forums conserning these cheap chinese imports.

What should i do?

Any help wuld be greately appreciated.

Kind regards

Patrick.

Just a link to two pictures that may or may not be of help identifying the hardrive.

If anyone could help i would appreciate it.

Kind regards

Patrick.

I had similar issues with my external HDD…I suppose that it’s not the problem with WD, but the OS (maybe…)

Here’s what I did, and it worked for me

I started the machine in safe-mode and then I was able to see the HD in My computer.

I simply copied all the files and moved it to the Machines HD.

Let me know if this was helpful

Rgds,

Thanks i will give it a go.

Unfortunately restarting my laptop in safe mode didnt solve my problem. I am at a loss as what to do. I seen in previous threads where a part on the board was cut off as a result of a spike in power. Is this the road for me?

I was considering removing the pcb to see if there was a burnt underneath. There is no smell of burning but my only other option is to buy some sata usb 3 leads. Will this work if a disc is not spinning?

In the future you will keep 2 copies of anything important. Now, I believe the data is still present on the disk. That’s good news. Get in touch with FZABKAR to see if your disk can be fixed by clipping off the TVS parts (if they’re shorted).

If this stuff is super important, consider a pro recovery service. As it stands now, it shouldn’t cost a lot. And chances are really high you’ll get everything back.
