I just bought a 1 TB My Passport Ultra. When I ran the first backup, it was stuck on “Preparing backup…” for almost an hour. Also, by USB 2.0, I meant my laptop has that but the drive has USB 3.0.
Here are the things that I tried:
- I installed the SES driver from WD’s knowledge base and restarted my machine before running the first backup
- I checked that the devices are working in Windows’ device manager.
- I ran Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows and the tests passed.
- I disconnected and connected the portable drive a couple times and tried running the backup again
- I tried a different USB port on my laptop
- the white light on the drive is steady (I’m not sure what the light indicates)
I’m not sure what else I can do? Does anyone have any suggestions? If nothing works, I’ll have to return this item.
