Writing Zeros

Hello,

I have a problem with writing zeros to my WD HD.

First let me elaborate the problem.

Last week my WD elements desktop 1TB quit on me.

Strange thing is, windows gives a sound when I connect it to my laptop, I can also ‘safely remove’ the device, but I can not see of open the drive in ‘my computer’.

So far, I tried to put it directly in a pc with a Sata cable. Same thing as with normal USB operation. So that is not the problem. I tried to run diagnostics, it recognizes the disk, but I can’t run diagnostics because I get the ‘to many bad sectors’ failure. As a last resort I tried to write zero to the disk, fully aware this will ruin any change of data recovery. When I try this I get this failure: Sector #0-256::Write zeros error! Continue? When I press oke, I get the next one, the numbers will change to 256-512. I continued to press oke until 40.000 something. I am not going to do that for probably 1 099 511 627 776 bytes ……:stuck_out_tongue:

Any advise?

It sounds like the drive is bad and you voided the warranty when you opened the case. What are you using to write zeroes?

Joe

Thank you for the reaction.

There was no warranty left unfortunately.

Otherwise I would not have bothered with it and just send it in;)

The WD elements software, Data lifeguard diagnostics.
