Won't recognize attached USB and Safepoint no longer working

I’m having a problem with SafePoint. I feel like I spend more time fixing WD My Cloud problems than I should.

I have a My Cloud 4T - attached to it is a 4T My Book I use as a backup (set up through SafePoint). Well a week ago it stopped doing backups. Now when I click on the attached USB button it says:
Western Digital My Book 1230
0 KB Free of 0 KB

Details:

When I plug the My Book directly to my laptop it has the backup and shows 1.7T free. What’s the deal?

My Book now no longer shows up as a Safepoint and I get the following message in the log

There was an error updating your safepoint.
2 - There was an error updating your safepoint Gogobackup on the My_Book_1230 share on gogocloud.

Can anyone help?

If you click on the alert or alarm icon next to the USB icon on the Dashboard, does it indicate that the My Cloud couldn’t mount the external USB drive?

Some of us are having trouble with certain external drives being mounted by the My Cloud post OS 3 firmware updates. There are one or two other threads discussing this issue with no firm solution as to how to fix it other than try a different USB drive. Here is one such thread discussing USB mounting failures.
