Hi Amulira,
Unfortuantely no WD External drives that we are manufacturing are compatible with Windows Vista. However, we do not support but you can try to use it with Windows Vista.
Thanks!
ok! if i decide to format a WD drive is it going to work with Vista?
Your best course of action is to retire the Vista PC, because you can buy a faster, PC with more memory, lots bigger internal drive(s) than your Vista for over half as much less money than the Vista cost you.
Other than that, you can check at eBay for older used or new external drives (at, or under 2TB capacity that states they work with Vista and Win 7 PCs Better get one in it;s its own enclosure and powered, too. You won’t need to format drive; it already will be. Drive can be from any manufacturer. You are in a bind, so can’t be choosy about the brand.
Better yet, get a new Win 10 PC, really.
thank’s for your comment! i don’t want to spend 7 or $800 for a new pc for now and my Vista still working great! i just saw a Seagate (STEA1000400) on Best Buy Canada who is compatible with Vista!
I know I am late in this game, But I have a similar question.
I use a Windows Vista desktop pc as my work horse because of all of the USB’s printers and scanner, external hard drives, etc, and I have several external WD HDs that work well on Vista and Win 8. I do not want to replace the Vista PC because of its performance such as duel core 32 or 64 CPU operations, and the SCSI Style HD controller foot print.
Question: Can I use Vista to READ and WRITE to 4TB + external drives?
I want to know can Vista READ WD’s latest external My Passport and My Book Drives. I am aware due to drive format, and chips in HD controller prevent large size of drives from being accessed by such machines. The thing is, I just want to READ and WRITE to the large drives using Vista, as well as win 8. I will not try to use the drive as a boot partition, nor try to format the drives with Vista due to Vista limitation, just READ and WRITE to it.
I want to use a my passport 5tb to retrieve files from a Vista pc. Is this not possible?
