Where is the Sharespace Firmware update for Lion/Timemachine AFP problem?

Hi WD,

When can we get the OSX Lion/Timemachine and WD SHarespace incompatibility fix, so that we can move to Lion? This is the only reason I suspended my decision to upgrade to Lion. But I need to get it done. I was told earlier it’d be the Week of 29th Aug, 2011. But that came and went. Any updates will be highly appreciated.

try calling WD Tech support and request to be transferred to Level 2 support. and ask level 2 if you can get an update for that. It seems that only level 2 support can answer your questions regarding updates

May I ask a question about WD Sharespace and Lion?

Here is my setup:

  1. WD Sharespace with the latest firmware update.

  2. Lion on my iMac

I’m not using the Sharespace completely yet, I have a copy of all my music on it and my wife has her iTunes music library connected to it (she use Snow Leopard).

I can see the WDSS on my Lion finder and can see the music and videos I put on it, I can also play them.

My only issue right now is that I cannot access via the web (using the IP address of the SS) the NAS drive.  Is that the issue you mentioned?

Also I do not use this drive for timemachine.

One more think, I would like to another WD USB drive to the back of the SS but right now I can not configure this because I can’t access the drive through the internet.

Thanks for any answer you may provide.

Thierry

well… accessing the drive through web right? Mionet… thats the software that they are using… you better call Mionet rather than WD…

I do not use Mionet because I have a Mac computer.  I use to go directly to my SareSpace IP address on my browser and was able to connect to it.  I upgraded to Lion about 2 months ago and I’m not sure if it’s related but I can not access the Admin screen on my browser anymore.

I still can see the drive and access the drive in my “Finder” though.

Not sure if the expected firmware update that should happen today will fix it.

Thanks

thierry

The reason you can open it in finder is it is using SMB not AFP. However, that you cannot access the admin screen via the web interface is an entirely different issue. That will be an issue because you need to use that to do updates. The 2 issues are unrelated. The sharespace needs a firmware update to support the new security feature sof OS X Lion AFP.

The patch is out. Just tell your sharespace to update and it will automaticly grab the file, etc.

dngovoni,

Well let’s hope I can use my wife’s MacBookPro with Snow Leopard to update the firmware and let’s hope I can logging to the drive using Lion after the update.

Thanks for the info, I read the long post into another forum about the new firmware being delay almost two months and finally being out today.  I will try to update tonight.

Thierry

PS: I will be happy to keep people posted about the result.

Sorry, that is not the issue. The web interface has nothing to do with whether you are using Snow Leopard or Lion. It’s strictly an http interface. If you cannot login to the sharespace via the web interface, it may mean the upgrade didn’t go 100% correctly.

Here are 2 suggestions:

  1. Reboot the sharespace to see if the http server comes up corretly.

  2. Login to the sharespace via ssh (user: root; pwd: welc0me) and try starting it by hand. You really have to have some knowledge about Linux to do this. do the following command:

 ps -ef | grep http
  425 root        288 S < /usr/sbin/mini_httpd -d /proto/SxM_webui -c **.php|**

If you don’t see a line similar to the one above, then something is wrong with the http daemon starting.

you can do the command: “cd /etc/init.d” and then try…  “./S55mini_httpd start”     (without quotes)

Otherwise, you will have to call WD tech support. You must have the web interface available to do the update,

Thanks Dennis,

I guess my issue is worth than I though.

I did not try to reboot the sharespace, let’s hope that is just the problem.  Should I eject the drive from the “Finder” first?

Also I have no knowledge of Linux, let’s hope your first suggestion work.

Thanks a lot for your help

Thierry

yes, eject the drive fro finder

Also, the new firmware supports the new apple AFP protocol, although I have to say I hand to do some things by hand to get rid of the DB errors.

Hello there…

After a successful firmware upgrade my sharespace lost all connections (smb, afp, http) after rebooting. I can’t reach the GUI, can’t connect to the shares… nothing…

When I try to connect via OSx i got the following message: "There was an error connecting to the server. Check the server name or IP address and try again. "

I’m in panic right now… lol… Have no idea what to do… I’ve searched the community but didnt find any solution.

Everything was ok before the upgrade… Anyone is facing this problem too? Help me!

Tks.

Worked, I took the booklet to see how to reset the SS and read how to set it up on mac again.  I was curious so I did rest it and use bonjour on my browser and was able to connect to the drive perfectly.

Thanks for all you help.

Thierry

PS: I did the firmaware update and it woked great.

Ronkifusco,

I had an issue you probably read in this post but did you try to connect to the ShareSpace using Bonjour on your browser?  Please do not feel insulted if it seems obvious to you and you already tried it, because I do not know your level in computing I though about this myself.

Using Bonjour in Safari allowed me to reconnect to the SS.  Also I reset the drive before this action because I had an issue for a while.

I did update the firmware after all of this and it worked great.  Hope you can solve your issue.

Good luck

Thierry

Thierry, thanks for the quick reply.

I did try to connect via bonjour and it didnt work. On the other hand i tried without doing a reset. I will reset it and try again.

Can i force a ssh connection and tweak something there? (i got a connection refuse on port 22 when i try to acess the root user).

Thanks again.

Joao carlos

ssh comes up, by default, on port 22, so it sounds like the ssh daemon is not running; nor does it sound like any other important services are started. If a reboot doesn’t work, then you may have to do a reset. I noticed that after the firmware was installed and the sharespace did its reboot, the AFP service demon did not auto start. I was able to do a start by hand. After that I fixed the DB errrors and when I rebooted, all the services came up.

Since this is a Linux-based system, the services are handled by daemons that are *supposed* to start automatically on a reboot, but if something isn’t quite right, they won’t. Usually a reboot, again, will clear this.

I upgraded via GUI and and it works fine and can now again browse the Sharespace in the network devices in Finder

However, when I try to setup Time Machine, Lion is throwing error when I select WDShareSpace-Backup, click “Use Backup Disk” and now get “There was a problem connecting to the server WDShareSpace.local”

So, yes for AFP, but no for TimeMachine :expressionless:

Hi, I have problem cannot access web GUI admin after update. I ssh and try command ps -ef | grep http , here is it show : 412 root. 976 S < /usr/sbin/mini_httpd -d /proto/SxM_webui -c **.php|** 1922 root 592 S Grep http you can do the command: “cd /etc/init.d” and then try…  “./S55mini_httpd start”     (without quotes) here it show : Starting mini_httpd: bind: Address already in use /usr/sbin/mini_httpd: can’t bind to any address I try “./S55mini_httpd restart” it seems httpd ok I think the index.http file was crash or lost. Anyone know how to update via CLI (via ssh), like script file ? Thanks, John
