What the max HDD size supported by My Cloud (fw 04.xx.xx-xxx)?

Hi ALL,

Im planning to upgrade my old My Cloud 2 TB (WDBCTL0020HWT) to bigger HDD.
Didn’t find, what the maxim HDD size is possible to install there…

P.S. Do you know what the differences between My Cloud (fw 04.xx.xx-xxx) and My Cloud
(fw 2.xx.xxx) devices? Means, why the second one is support to upgrade to My Cloud OS 5 Firmware and the first one - no?

If you look around this subforum (using the forum search feature - magnifying glass icon upper right) you’ll find a number of people who have put larger hard drives in their single bay My Cloud units. Don’t think anyone yet has reported back with an issue on very large drives.

At some point however, for most people, it becomes a waste of money and effort to put an expensive hard drive into a limited NAS enclosure like the first gen My Cloud that is no longer supported by WD. Outside of certain specific desires, one would ultimately be better off buying a more capable NAS enclosure to put a large expensive hard drive(s) into.

For example, my post a while back where I experimented using a 12TB drive in a first gen single bay My Cloud and attaching a second 12TB as an external drive for a total of 22TB’s of usable storage space. Worked fine for the experiment. Put those two 12TB drives into a Synology unit instead.

Another post where i put a 8TB WD Red into a first gen single bay My Cloud.

And another thread where I experimented with using a 2.5 inch hard drive in a single bay My Cloud. Strangly I couldn’t get an SSD drive to work, but a HDD (mechanical) worked fine if a bit slow.

Another user started a recent thread where using 18TB is pondered. Don’t know if they ever followed through before the thread got derailed.

Because of the firmware numbering, and the difference between the two units many are confused. WD further confused things by introducing the My Cloud Home line which many mistook for being similar to the My Cloud line, it isn’t. The Home devices have a different operating system and different features. Its a confusing mess for the customers.

The second gen single bay My Cloud is barely capable of running OS5 v5.x firmware. Read through the MANY complaints in the OS5 subforum about second gen single bay users who’s units were unusable after updating to OS5. They had to stop features like Twonky and Remote Access to regain usage of their devices. First gen single bay with even less capable hardware than the second gen has been end of software updates for several years now anyhow.

12TB drive should work without issue. Didn’t have to do the 3.3v pin kapton tape trick that some WD drives (White Label) require on a 12TB WD White Label (shucked Easystore) drive when used in the first gen single bay My Cloud enclosure or in a Synology NAS.

Some comments made in another post when I’ve unbricked drives for use on a first gen (v4.x) single bay My Cloud using user Fox_Exe’s directions.

Notes on running unbrick directions: After successful unbrick one can update the My Cloud to the latest firmware. When running the first gen unbrick directions from User Fox_exe I typically get one or two errors, which I tend to bypass. The unbrick process typically completes despite these errors. Places where I typically get warnings or errors:

  • Step 8. The command ‘mdadm -A /dev/md0 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdb2’ sometimes throws an error. I typically just ignore the error and continue to the next entry command in step 8.
  • Step 12. When using the original_v04.01.02-417.tar.gz file, I get a out of space error when running the command ‘dd if=kernel.img of=/dev/sdb5’. I typically ignore this error and proceed to the next entry command in step 12. When using the original_v03.04.01-230.tar.gz extracted files I do not get the out of space error message on sdb5.
  • When booting the My Cloud for the first time after unbricking the hard drive I eventually get a red front LED after the bootup completes. I then attempt to access the My Cloud Dashboard. If I am able to access the Dashboard I run a Settings > Utilities > System Factory Restore > System Only restore. This typically fixes the 0K capacity and the failed mount issue that typically happens with this unbrick procedure.
