Reds are mostly used for a Network Accessed Storage (NAS) eg. My Clouds
Major Difference between My Books and WD Elements is …
My Books have Password Protection and Hardware Encryption and Software.
WD Elements don’t. (Which is why they are usually cheaper. … they are basic no frills storage.)
Something to consider before purchase: if a My Book enclosure fails you can’t remove the hard drive and place it in a different enclosure to access your data … as it’s Hardware Encrypted.
if a WD Elements enclosure fails … you can remove the hard drive and place it in a different enclosure to access your data.
I Have a related question:
I upgraded from a “My book 8TB” ( WD My Book External Desktop Hard Drive Storage 3 TB - 18 TB | Western Digital) to a “My cloud pro series” (Western Digital My Cloud PR4100, NAS Hard Drive | Western Digital).
Now my question : Can I clone the “My Book 8 Tb” to a Clean drive ? Format the "My book "-drive , open up the encloser and intstal that drive in to my new toy the “My cloud” ?
( I would like to be sure I don’t lose data and after reading “My book” drives use some kind of encryption this looks the safest procedure…) Can someone confirm if I understand this correct ?
Hope to not lose my data in upgrading my storage system …
