My Book vs Elements Desktop

WD currently has two external desktop drive models, the My Book and the Elements Desktop.

I understand the My Book has included software and supports encryption. The My Book also has a 4TB version.

But for the 3TB versions, are the physical drives inside the same? My question is in regards to quality and realiabilty. I didn’t know if both product lines use the same exact drive or is the Elements model a lesser drive.

Frank2012,

Unfortunately this information is currently unable to be provided. We cannot guarantee a particular internal hard drive model, data interface, rotational speed, or cache size in the external hard drive enclosure. Please visit the following link for additional information:

One thing to keep in mind the models that use a password are hardware encrypted by a circuit board. If the board fails it is quite difficult or impossible to retrieve data. The Elements if it has a standard SATA connector can be connected as an internal if needed for data recovery.
