What is the difference between 'Back-up' and transfering music or photos to the relevant public folder?

I have backed yup all my music to my new WD MyCloud.

However I can’t find it to play it so I also copying the music from my PC to the My CLoud ‘music’ folder. I am under the impression I have missed a vital step as it seems a waste of time to ‘back up’ music, then have to copy it to a public folder.

I intend to stream the music to my Sonos system.

I have researched the Dashboard for a solution but cannot find one. I would appreciate advice to where I have gone wrong.

Thank you.

…and you did this, how?

Hi Tony,
I acked up music and videos using the back-up tab on the dashboard.

First if you haven’t done so already you should read the My Cloud User Manual (http://support.wdc.com/product.aspx?ID=904) which explains how to use the various features of the My Cloud. The User Manual explains what the “Backup” (or Safepoint in the v4.x firmware My Cloud) feature does and how to use it.

The Backup option in the Dashboard is for backing up the My Cloud to another device/location. It does NOT backup the data from your computer to the My Cloud. Rather it backups the data on the My Cloud to a USB hard drive attached to the My Cloud or to some other device.

If you want to backup the data on your computer to the My Cloud one can use either Smartware or a third party backup program/software if using a Windows PC. For Mac’s one can use Apple’s Time Machine. See the My Cloud User Manual for more information on Smartware and Apple Time Machine. Or see the Smartware User Manual (http://support.wdc.com/knowledgebase/answer.aspx?ID=15136). The Smartware software can be downloaded from one of the following links:

Thank you for the pointers and advice, issue solved, much learnt!
