I was thinking of purchasing a new hard drive, I’m looking at the WD My Book but idk if it requires connection to a power supply while connected to my PC, the last hard drive i had was a WD portable drive and that just connected to my PC, I was hoping to get something similar to that but the portable ones are not very large (I need 20TB) thanks for any assistance!
The smaller, portable drives use laptop size (2.5") disk drives. They often get enough power from the USB connection. The larger capacity (and physically larger) drives typically use typically desktop (3.5") drives which require a dedicated power source.
This is not unique to WD.
hey thanks for the reply! so i must connect it by plug for it to work?
A My Book? Yes. Look at the specs and WD lists the connections as a USB (Micro-B but may depend on specific model) and a Power Supply.
The portable drives are capacity constrained due to their small size. Small size typically means less power required. If you really need 20TB, you’re going to have to go to the larger drives and they will require external power.
thanks buddy!
