WD Green 2TB SMART Failure

Good Morning,

Hopefully someone can advise of the correct course of action. I have a home NAS that has several WD Green 2TB drives arranged in a raid 5. I have configured the system to do a weekly SMART test on the array and recently one of the drives came back bad with advice to “replace the disk as soon as possible”.

I have read through the process for raising an RMA and replacing the drive and I am happy with that, however my question is does this drive qualify for a replacement as technically it is still spinning and working Albeit with reported errors by the SMART subsystem on the NAS.

Also I am reluctant to remove the drive (breaking the raid) run the WD test.analysis software. If it finds out the drive is faulty then I have to run a raid for up to 30 days while I wait for a replacement or risk putting the failing drive back into the raid and stress it further with a rebuild.

Oh the humanity of it all. If anybody can advise of the best course of action.

Thanks,

   AndyB
