WD Elements 500 Gig External Hard Drive not being recognized on laptop

I have had my Blue Scorpio 500 Gig WD External Hard drive for over a year. I have tried everything to try to recover the data and nothing has worked. I even have an external hard drive enclosure and the drive still can’t be recognized on my computer while in the new enclosure that I received for Christmas. When I tried initializing the enclosure to work (the drive is in it), I got 2 errors. The error I received under MBR (Master Boot Record) was: Incorrect Function. The error I received when I tried to initialize it under GPT (GUID Partition Table) was: Data Error (cyclic redundancy check). The space on the disk itself is 2048.00GB. I figure that the disk is dead and nothing can be recovered from it.

So, is the drive dead or can I manage to recover data from it?

Hello there,

Have you tried using a data recovery software?

Test the drive using the DLG Tool

How to test a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows

I have tried data recovery software  and it doesn’t work since the drive itself can not be picked up by my laptop. The Data Lifeguard Diagnostic seems complicated. I’ve found this: http://www.westerndigitalrecovery.net/ but I am skeptical when it comes to using programs like these. Has anyone else used this program to recover a dead WD Hard Drive? Does the program work?
