Using WD Security with WD My Passport and WD My Cloud

Is there any way to get WD Security software to interact with a drive plugged into the back of the My Cloud drive? It only seems to work when you plug it in to a local USB port on a computer.

I purchased a WD My Passport Ultra for one single purpose: to hold safepoints for my WD My Cloud device. I keep it stored off site at the office and I bring it home at regular intervals to update the safepoint. To create the safepoint I plugged the Passport into the back of the My Cloud device with the USB 3.0 cable.

Later, I decided to secure the drive with the WD Security tool. It makes good sense in case my drive is stolen at the office; my data won’t be compromised. However, it has presented a bit of a usability pain as I cannot update my safepoint if a password is set. I have to plug it into my PC first, remove the password, then plug it in to the back of the My Cloud to update the safepoint. After that, I have to plug it back into the PC and re-secure it. It works, but it’s a bit of a PITA.

Is there a better way? Thanks.

Hello,

“If a WD external drive has been locked, when it is attached to the My Cloud device, it
maintains that security and can be unlocked or relocked using the Dashboard.”

I found that on page #85 of the user’s manual.

Here is the link to he manual:

Thanks, Hamlet. That helped me to find what I needed. The UI control that I needed to access on the dashboard was under the USB drop-down button at the top of the control panel. There’s a key icon that allowed me to unlock the drive. The drive appears to lock itself after removal. Problem solved.
