Update Mycloud 1 bay with Glp firmware

I would like to update the firmware gpl-source-wd_my_cloud-04.05.00-342.zip which as you can see is not a .dep file to do it directly through the option to update via file in Mycloud. I don’t see the instructions to do it through Linux. Does anyone know the steps to follow or have the .dep file of this latest firmware before the last and definitive final firmware for this device came out. Thanks for your help.

Did you unzip the file? There is a wd-readme.txt file, inside the folder, with instruction to build the .deb(s).

I don’t have the same unit, nor have I tried to build the deb.

The first generation single bay My Cloud (P/N “-00”, OS3 firmware v4.x) does not support OS5 / v5.x firmware. The first gen My Cloud discussion can be found at the following legacy subforum.

OS3 My Cloud

As the prior person indicated there should be WD-README.txt file in the extracted gpl-source-wd_my_cloud-04.05.00-342.zip file that in general terms has instructions and information on how to setup the proper environment to build the required firmware .deb(s) file.

Search, using the subforum search feature (magnifying glass icon top right), the legacy OS3 My Cloud subforum above for discussions on compiling firmware. There are a number of old discussions on the topic.

Edit to add: Note that the first gen 4.x firmware My Cloud uses a 64K page-size. Meaning you may have to recompile any binaries into that 64K page-size that you are trying to add or import into the firmware structure. And being a WD custom version of Debian you may find it is missing certain modules, services or binaries found in stock Debian.

Indeed, my single bay computer is P/N “-00” series, OS3 v4.x firmware. In the readme file there are some small instructions on how to update and compile to 64k having to install the Linux version with which it was going to work to do the firmware transfer, some specific dependencies and more things that I miss due to my limited knowledge of Linux. I managed to create the disk for the cloud from 0 following the Fox-exe manual and it is working, but since the firmware that worked was V3, it is very obsolete, but I also do not want to do an automatic update to the latest firmware they released to put the computer out of service in case I lose some local dlna or ftp service, because I know that on the outside network it is already disabled from their servers. That’s why I was looking for the penultimate firmware with a .deb file or the steps to follow for the update from the gpl file, but I haven’t found in the forum the steps to follow to do it through Linux.

Not sure I follow. What makes you think you’ll loose local network access to DLNA (Twonky Media Server) or to FTP services if you update to the very latest first gen single bay My Cloud firmware (04.06.00-111 (4/15/2022))? Both of those services will continue to work in the latest and last firmware update 04.06.00-111 (4/15/2022) for the first generation single bay My Cloud.

What WD terminated for the OS3 My Cloud units was the WD mycloud.com web portal for remote access. WD recommends one isolate the OS3 My Cloud from the internet and use it only for local network access. (See this link for more.)

The Fox_Exe “unbrick” directions for the first generation single bay My Cloud included the option to download and use the v4.01.02-417 firmware. Even when using the v3.04.01-230 firmware from those directions one could still update to v4.x firmware without updating to the very last 04.06.00-111 firmware. WD only makes available the three most recent firmware versions:
Firmware Version 04.05.00-342 (09/04/2019): https://downloads.wdc.com/nas/sq-040500-342-20190805.deb
Firmware Version 04.05.00-353 (11/17/2021): https://downloads.wdc.com/nas/sq-040500-353-20211104.deb
Firmware Version 04.06.00-111 (04/15/2022): https://downloads.wdc.com/nas/sq-040600-111-20220109.deb
Others have created repositories of most if not all of the My Cloud firmware:

Thank you very much Bennor for your help. It is much easier to update with the .deb files. I admit that I was somewhat afraid of updating to the latest version and losing the services mentioned. In any case, since you tell me that the ftp and dlna access are not lost, I will update to that final version. I will bookmark the page with the firmware collection for the mycloud 1 bay version. Thanks.
