I am using WD My Passport hard disk.
When my hard disk is connected to my pc, it will not load. My other hard disk does not have this issue.
My entire PC will be slowed down and I will not be able to access any folders like device management and etc. or to even do chkdsk.
Used a different cable and pc but to no avail too. please help!
I’d suggest that you use the WD Drive Utilities program and run a complete drive test. If it fails, chances are that your drive is failing or has already failed.
If it passes, use Disk Management to see if the drive is formatted with a valid file system. If there are no partitions on your Passport or a partition with an incompatible file system, Windows will not mount it and thus will not display in Windows Explorer. It is also possible that a partition with a compatible file system may not have a drive letter assigned to it, which will also cause it not to appear in Windows Explorer.
There can be many reason for inaccessible hard disk:
USB cable: Check USB cable whether it is working fine or not.
USB Port: Check whether you are inserting drive to correct USB port or not.
Drive’s Driver Compatibility: Go to device manager and check whether drive is listing there or not. If it is listed there then do right click on that and then click on Update driver.
Same Drive Name: Sometimes because of the same drive name, drive stop detected by system. Check if any of the existing drive has same name.
Sometimes the drive becomes inaccessible due to corrupted or unreadable disk structure. This issue generally occurs due to missing or corrupted drive partition or due to malware attack, corrupt or missing file system, incompatible/corrupt disk drivers, hardware errors, and connectivity issues.
Here are a few DIY fixes you can try to resolve the issue:
Unplug and re-plug the external HDD or USB drive
Uninstall and Reinstall Disk Driver
Run Hardware and Device Troubleshooter
Run Disk Scan for Hard drive errors
Run CHKDSK Command
Assign a file system to the hard drive in Disk Management
The latest version of the driver is available through Windows Update, so make sure you you’re connected to the internet and have Windows search for an updated driver on Windows Update. You can also manually download and install that driver from the Microsoft Catalog website, making sure you select the version that matches your version of Windows and architecture.
The WD SES driver shouldn’t affect general usage of the drive, and it should work fine without it. I believe the driver is required if you want to change the drive’s settings (turn LED light on/off or change sleep duration) using the WD software.
I am having the same exact issue as of about 2 hours ago. Now when it does recognize the drive, it asks how I want it to be handled in the future i.e., open to search files, etc. Which makes me think it has been reformatted… but I did not clear or reformat the drive so not sure if my data is still there or not. If it has been reformatted somehow, is there a way to have that data recovered? My drivers are up to date and it says it is working fine when I’m able to get the property windows to load. Help, I’m desperate!
I ended up having to send my drive in to be recovered - it was a disc hardware failure. Mine was still under warranty so I’m hoping WD will make good on at least refunding the drive… and maybe the $1k for recovery would be nice too
