Found a useful quirk with the present MyCoud firmware.
At the moment you can either have an entire share crawled for media or not. You can have fine control over what directories are examines for media.
Turn on Twonly.
Turn off the media shareing option on all the shares.
Set a password on Twonky by going to: http://WdMyCloudDL4100:9000/ (Substitute the name for the name of your NAS)
Set a password on Twonky. This prevents the Web UI from changing Twonky’s settings.
Use Twonky’s own settings to select exactly what directories are to be shared to DNLA media players and what catagory of media is shared from selected directories.
Myron, thanks for the Twonky tip. I currently don’t have a need to do this now, although I may at sometime in future. Meanwhile, here are some additions to your tip:
When using Win 7, if one is using the File Explorer, and goes into the Network section (click on Network) all the devices on network show up and the WD NAS shows up under Media Devices. Right-click on the WD NAS and select “View device webpage” and you are at the Twonly server page you described, so nothing necessary to type into a browser.
I first noticed the Twonky server when I was using the Twonky Beam app on IPad a few years ago, and the clone app of it, Belkin MediaPlay. (When apps are in use they show up on Network as NAS does.) I still have the good version of Twonky Beam on my iPad and also the (still available) MediaPlay app. I looked at them both again tonight and located the Twonky server from both apps. The server built into the NAS is more elaborate and feature filled, whereas the Twonky Beam app, although similar, lacks some features. MediaPlay’s Twonky is fairly simplistic in comparison. Each had a different version number.
It really would be nice if 1) we had some good instructions for using and setting up the built in Twonky servers, and 2) If somehow, the good Twonky Beam app (that was discontinued) could be resurrected and distributed again for all to use. I have mentioned elsewhere in these forums that it would be great if WD could get the rights to the old Twonky Beam app and incorporate it into the somewhat lame My Cloud app. Really not sure why Twonky Beam was discontinued; likely had to do with Twonky company being sold to a Japan outfit.
When looking in Network, not only does the WD NAS appear under Media Devices, it also shows under Storage (of cousre) and a right-click on it there and you can view the device webpage, which happens to be the NAS’ Dashboard. Handy as well.
