The Disk you inserted was not readable by this computer

I am having problems with my WD 500g External hard drive. I have been using it for around 1 year and have never had a problem with it until now.

“The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer” comes up every time i plug it in. (see attached picture)

Also in Disk utility it in reading it as a 2.2TB Drive??? (see attached picture)

Within the First Aid of the disk utility is says if you are having trouble with this disk click ‘Repair Disk’ ; or if repair disk is unavailable click Verify Disk. Both these options are unavailable, it will not let me click! (see attached picture)

Dude, sounds like there’s something wrong witht the drive. If you have a Windows partition then run DLG (You get it from WD’s site) to run a deeper diagnostic and see if anything else (Other than replacing) can be done as most of the times, a drive that shows over its real capacity means it had a bad problem with the platters.

yup. needs replacing.

What are my options in terms of extracting all files on the external somehow before i replace it. Is this a costly/ possible process?

Am i liable for replacement of the drive as the expense of Western Digital? Or am i expected to wear the cost?

It may be possibly but will be expensive.

Has anyone had to seek data recovery for an external hard drive before? Was it a successful process? How much did it cost?

Do Western Digital offer this service if dealing with a WD product?

as I understand it, you should be able to get a cost analysis and whether they can save your data, before paying.  they should not charge you if they cannot recover your data.  I’ve heard that it can cost anywhere from 300 to 1,000 dollars US.
