"The configuration of the drive has failed." when setting RAID 1 (Mirrored)

When using the WD Drive Utilities and trying to set RAID Management > Configuration > Mirror, you may get the error message “The configuration of the drive has failed.”

Follow the instructions below to fix the error for Windows 7.

  1. Navigate to Control Panel > System > Device Manager.
  2. Under WD Drive Management devices, you should see WD SES Device with an exclamation mark by the icon. Right click and choose Uninstall.
  3. Navigate to the product’s support page (in my case My Book Duo Downloads) and download the WD SES software.
  4. Extract > Run > Install it.
  5. Restart your computer.
  6. Try setting to RAID 1 again.

What a headache it was to figure out that this is how you fix the error. WD doesn’t even have this as steps on their support page. Their techs just tell you to uninstall and reinstall the Drive Utility and couldn’t even figure it out when remoting into my computer. Please update support article #13988 with these steps and save your customers a world of headaches.
