Question regarding os5

Hello,

I have a Mycloud EX2ultra and i’m wondering on everyones different views on should i upgrade to os5 or not and why? it would be highly appreciated

I have not any problem with OS5

Define “problem”.

Pros:

  • Updated security
  • Device finally shows up in Windows file explorer Network section
  • Port forwarding for web access seems to play better than I recalled in the past (although, this may have been fixed in later versions of OS3)
  • USB drives are no longer indexed by default (critical: Because on Large drives, indexing would tie up the unit so completely that you can’t get into the &*#&^ing unit to turn it off)

Cons:

  • The WD web access via phone apps and WD servers is much more limited than OS3 and poorly implemented.
  • Indexing (to provide web functionality) is . . . problematic. (I mean it works; just ties up the machine and makes it unusable for the first few days or weeks)
  • App support is much more limited
  • Unit will not sleep properly (although, to be fair, not sure this ever worked under OS3 either)
  • Unit seems to want to “phone home” much more often than OS/3. Have not seen details on this.
  • HTTPS redirect to “local device name” requires internet access, and involves publishing your device access details with a DNS server; along with getting a certificate

On balance. . . . OS5 is an improvement step; but I think most would agree that its not fully baked. From my point of view; as a “locally accessible NAS”, which is blocked from internet access at the router. . .it’s fine.

I have one NAS on OS/5; and two on OS/3. I am in no hurry to upgrade further.
I am not annoyed enough with OS/5 or OS/3 to replace the units in their entirety;
but if I was buying a replacement NAS. . . not sure WD would be my first choice.

Imo No. If you’re happy with how it works now upgrading is only going to make your life more difficult not less, plus youll need to commit many hours of hair tearing trying to get it back to how you want it just with less features. Read over this forum how both basic and historic functionality is changed or missing now, why would anyone want the headache? I have no idea.
