I’ve just bought this drive and reviews on Amazon says its a very quiet drive but this one certainly isn’t.
When it’s first connected to the computer, it makes some quite loud clicking noises, far louder than any of my internal hard drives and it takes 5-10 seconds before it appears in Windows Explorer. In contrast, my old 2TB Hitachi drive appears almost instantly without making any strange noises.
It seems to benchmark OK when I test it, reaching 212/214.9MB/s sequential read/write, as shown in this screenshot CDM-WD-Elements-1-Rear-Port hosted at ImgBB — ImgBB but when I tried copying two 101GB files to it from an internal NVME drive, it took about 35 minutes which is twice as long as it should have taken at 215MB/s. Also, the speed bar was constantly fluctuating between 150MB/s and 25MB/s over the course of about 2-3s.
I tried copying one of these files to my Hitachi drive, which has a lower write speed of 114MB/s, and the speed bar is quite stable, only fluctuating between 69-71MB/s.
I also tried copying the 100GB files from the Elements to a NVME drive in a USB caddy and the speed starts at about 200MB/s and then the drive starts making a grinding noise for about 6s as the speed decreases to about 45MB/s, before the noise stops and it and increases back up to 200MB/s and repeats this cycle continuously.
Has anyone else got one of these drives and noticed any of these issues?
