I have a new Dell PC that I moved a WDC RED HDD to from my old PC. When I do warm restarts, the PC hangs at the Dell Splash screen. Cold restarts work fine. If I disconnect the HDD, I have no issues with warm or cold restarts. Works the way it is supposed to. Anyone have any ideas to a solution? Dell support has not been able to help despite hours spent with them. The drive is a WDC WD20EFRX. Thanks
The fact that it hangs at the Dell logo only during a warm restart points more to the BIOS having trouble reinitializing that older WD20EFRX than to Windows itself. I’d try one thing that often gets missed: enter BIOS with F2 and look for the SATA or storage setting, then check whether the drive is being detected normally and whether the controller is set to RAID or AHCI. Also try moving the HDD to a different SATA port and use a different SATA data cable if you have one. A cold boot fully resets the drive, while a warm restart can leave an older drive in a state the newer Dell firmware doesn’t handle well. If the problem follows the drive or cable, run Dell’s preboot diagnostics on it before doing anything destructive. dell.com
