Hi all,
Just wanted to start a new thread on this as I have commented on a few posts about this issue.
Long story short I have 8TB PR2100 in raid 1 so mirrored drive.
When the indexing/cloud/ thumbnail process started after I upgraded to OS5 I noticed a hell of a lot of my free space disappearing, no new folders were created on the drive. After investigations it seemed like it was this new cloud process so to be able to remote into your app to watch media for example every file has to index & thumbnails created with no option to delete this so called process. The indexing also never stopped despite the % finishing the drives were getting pounded 24/7 for several days without going into sleep mode with each day that passes I had lost even more drive space.
So essentially if you want to watch/access media remotely you either have to have cloud on or tuff luck (OS 3) never had this issue with space being lost.
There are a few unofficial ways to downgrade to os 3 but why would we risk such a move if you are not confident in things like this.
Anyway I’m under warranty until next year so I managed to get a replacement drive as it’s not fit for purpose I paid over £600 for this & I had a lot of space left for more media now it felt like I was forced to upgrade my drives due this software update.
New drive came today with os3 on it & I have copied all the media from the old drive to the new & that is when I noticed the huge difference in space. On my old drive I had 218GB space left on the new drive same files copied over I have 670GB left what a difference & exactly the same files.
I’m not an expert on anything so I’m hoping any experience users can suss out why the ridiculous loss of space when os 3 never did that & you still managed to access media via the app etc.
I have a hunch it’s a ■■■■ one but here goes because I am on raid 1 the thumbnail process could be duplicated on both drives so if I lose 200gb on one drive it’s essentially 400gb over both drives. I’m probably wrong but hey. Other than that I had to fight tooth & nail to get this sorted.
I now have the new drive & I have turned the auto update feature off I don’t want anything to do with os 5 until this is resolved.
Any user response would be great & WD If your looking at this, the saying if it’s not broke don’t fix it comes to mind.
One last thing, to all the users that had wee tricks to stop system processes & downgrading things fair play to you, you should work for WD as your response as been amazing considering you don’t work for them. However if you are like myself & aren’t confident in doing stuff like that, why should you to be fair it should “just work” & it did just work before hand.
