"Operation successful" erasing WD but then error

Hi! I’m trying to format an old WD, which had read problems years ago, to use as a backup drive for both Mac and Windows. Yesterday I had a lot of errors (-69825), but today I tried again (without adjusting the device name) and the process was confirmed successful.

I try to “eject” and it doesn’t respond. I close and reopen “Disk Utility” and it doesn’t recognize it.

It’s as if I haven’t erased or formatted it.
What could be happening? Thanks!

Could be the old disk is finished. Hard disks are not invincible. WB enclosures are also rather dodgy too.

Try removing the disk from the WD enclosure and try a generic USB enclosure and see if that works better.
