No sound when playing MKV video files

I use a WD portable drive to store videos. This is plugged into a WD HD Media Player. All videos play fine except for MKV videos. The video plays, but I get no audio, only a message saying these files are unsupported. Any solutions? TIA

You need to find out what Audio Codec the MKV is using (i use mediainfo for that)

Supported Audio Codecs for MKV container are …

AAC
AC3
Dolby Digital Plus
Dolby TrueHD
DTSHD
MPEG Audio
PCM
DTS
FLAC

If the message is saying “unsupported” then it could be a newer codec like DOLBY ATMOS which the WD TV does not support.

You’ll have to convert it to something that is supported.

I googled it. Looks like I can try converting using VLC
