New WD MyBook (3TB) failed Data LifeGuard Diagnostic's Extented Test

Hello there,

I just received a brand new WD MyBook with 3TB. I can connect it and use it as expected (works pretty neat  ). However I did a precautionary test in order to check whether everything is fine with the drive.

While the SMART Data is totally OK, the  Extented Test failed. The Test Error Code is “08- Too many bad sectors detected”. Should I replace the Drive or is this a “normal result” for a drive of this size?

Thank you for your help.

PS: It seems that the Quick Test also fails. “It seems” because Data LifeGuard displays it will be finished in 5 minutes for the last 40 minutes :).

Hi no that is not normal. Get a copy of hard disk sentinel and run it it will give you a report in a few sec if it reports bad sector’s it is time to replace that drive. http://www.hdsentinel.com/download.php just get the trial version. Now if it has bad sectors it may be faster if you just got the drive to return it for a replacement where you bought it. If not you will have to RMA the drive with WD. You can check the warranty status here and also start the RMA.  http://support.wdc.com/warranty/index_end.asp?lang=en
