At the weekend I purchased a My Cloud 3TB unit WDBCTL0030HWT. Because I’ve used WD drives in the past I figured it was a good move.
After reading up on istalation and required software etc etc I’m not so sure. I’ve read many accounts of people saying that the software is ‘broken’ for Windows 10 and much of it is problematic. I am on W10 (64 bit) and use Android moblies. I have a few questions please bear with me.
There seems to be many different software modules available to run in conjunction with this unit. Can someone tell me what I really ‘need’ to use it.
I’m concerned that the only folder I can backup to is called ‘Public’ does this mean literally that? I would like to backup different devices to different folders, i.e my mobile to a folder for that, my desktop to it’s own folder, my wife’s mobile to her own etc etc.
I would like to use it for streaming files that I dont want to carry, can this be done from the backup folder?
I would like to have a remote dashboard (in my office) to be able to use while I’m away from the house but I don’t seem to be able to get to it anywhere.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I’m not a PC dummy but seemingly I am with network backup devices (this is my first).
Thanks a lot
Jason.
First, if you have not done so already you should read the My Cloud User Manual (http://support.wdc.com/product.aspx?ID=904) and the My Cloud Dashboard Help. The User Manual explains many of the features of the My Cloud and how to use them.
For local network access to the My Cloud one does not need to use any of the WD software. One can use Windows File Explorer or Mac Finder for local access. Further one can “map” Shares to their PC for faster/easier local network access.
Both the My Cloud User Manual and the WD My Cloud Dashboard Help explain how to create Users and Shares. And how to make those Share Private then grant User permission (Full Access, Read Only Access, No Access) to those Shares.
Media can be streamed on the local network from any folder that has Media Serving enabled on it through the My Cloud Dashboard. One can use any DLNA enabled media client on the local network to stream media from the My Cloud. To stream remotely is a different story and one would typically use one of the My Cloud mobile apps for iOS or Android, or the WD My Cloud Desktop program, or download the media file to your local device using MyCloud.com web portal.
