New Passport SSD only half speed on MacBook Pro

Hi, I hope someone can help me before I send this product back.

I have just purchased the WD MY PASSPORT SSD 256GB for my MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015), which has USB3.

The transfer speeds should be around the 500MB/s mark. I wanted the fast read/ write speeds for video editing on Premiere Pro.

I have checked the speed using Black Magic Disk Speed Test and I can only get around the 200MB/s which is not what I was expecting at all.

Is there something I am missing here? Any advise would be appreciated as I don’t want to have to send the drive back.

Thanks in advance,

Callum.

To see the full speed you need USB 3.1. The 2013 mac is only USB 3 and while compatible with USB 3 you would not get the full 500MB/s

Thanks for the reply.

My MacBook pro is 2015 but yes USB 3.0. Should it not be faster than 200MB/s though?
Apple claim up to 500MB/S on USB3.0 on their specifications.

Thanks,

Callum

Does anyone know if connecting it via the Apple Thunderbolt 3 USB-C to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter would speed up the slow transfer rate?

Even for USB 3.0 one should get arround 330+MB/s on usb 3.1 gen1 410MB/s on gen 2 its 460MB/s but its practically keeps fluctuating.
