New 2TB passport - questions

I purchased this in a panic today after experiencing some quirky problems on my old shop computer that has NEVER been backed up. I will back it first thing tomorrow upon powering it up using my new drive. My question’s for you folks are:

  1. Can I back up multiple computers using my passport? Old shop puter uses XP Pro, my laptop uses Win 7, wifes laptop uses Win 7 also.
  2.  If this is possible I presume I need to partition into three drives - is this correct?
  3.  I want to back up weekly - should I backup and then dis-connect the Passport until needed again?

Thanks for any help guys - us old computer people need folks like you.

Hello,

Yes, you can backup all your computers on the same Passport and you don’t need to create several partitions. Smartware will create a separate folder with the name of each computer. Check the link below for the steps.

How to create a category backup using WD SmartWare Version 1.6.x and earlier

No, you dont need to partition the drive. If you use the backup software that comes with the drive, the WD Smartware will create different folders for each computers.

I want to back up weekly - should I backup and then dis-connect the Passport until needed again?

The WD Smartware will do it either way, you can set that for automatic backup or schedule backup. Now if the drive is not connected, the backup will failed.
