Need help with ideas for my backup solution

Greetings,

I work for a company that is partially set on AD. I would prefer not to use AD if I do not have to but it is still an option. I have recently bought a WD My Cloud PR4100 and I am finding that the WD smartware application can’t back up specific folder paths and file extensions.

I am looking for a free/cheap third party software that allows me (the admin) to set up some type of back up scheme that doesn’t allow the user to edit them after I leave their computer. Problem is, most of these users are set as administrators on their own computer. Basically I need a software that always prompts for third party credentials that I set up before allowing anyone to go in to the settings. Does anyone know of such a software? I am trying to back up user profiles in the C: drive.

I am also okay with installing software on another computer that can tell this machine to “grab” data from these computers and put it on the NAS. This is the alternative method I can think of instead of the conventional “send backup to nas” method.

Hello there,

Let’s see if another user can share some information on a software that can help you with the backup you need on your system.

How tech-savvy are you?

You could set up an rsync-job on the PR4100 and schedule it via the crontab (Backups will be “pulled to the NAS”, so to speak). Problem however is that crontab changes won’t survive NAS reboots. There is a step-by-step guide to make them stick somewhere on this sub-forum, though.

Unfortunately, I’m not that tech savvy. Power appears to be an issue for my building at least 2 or 3 times a year so sudden reboots may happen. I can’t believe I haven’t been able to find an admin locked back up software. I would have thought that someone would have come up with this by now. But thank you for your suggestion.
