Need help Rsync from Synology to WD Mycloud

Hi All need some help with my Rsync setup on my Single Bay 4TB running firmware 5.33.102.

I went trough different configs found on googgle. I’m running DMS 7.2 on my synology.

I can connect to the device using Hyperbackup and select the folder, once done I move on to select packages but but after that wen hitting the next button i says failed to connect to destination.

The strange part is when I do this from the command line from my synology like:

rsync -ahv /volume1/Documents syno@192.168.1.12::test/.

it works fine, anyone like to chip in on what is wring, I look to use the WD as a DR backup and store it safe.

Also tried with port 22 encryption, it fails asking me if I have disabled 2FA, but again work from command line :frowning:

Thanks in advance

Have you enabled rsync within the Synology Control Panel > File Services? That may be needed.

Don’t know if the MY Cloud OS supports using encryption over SSH (port 22). One may be relegated to unencrypted rsync. Make sure to check the My Cloud > Settings > Network section to see if there are any relevant settings you may need to change (like SSH or similar).

If you haven’t done so already you may want to search through and or post your question over on the Synology NAS community subforum to see if they have any suggestions since it appears to be an issue with the Synology DSM GUI app: https://community.synology.com/enu/forum/1

Don’t have OS5 (v5.x) firmware single bay My Cloud but made a post years ago about rsync from a single bay OS3 v4.x firmware single bay My Cloud to a Synology NAS. In that instance I had to enable rsync on the Synology for the rsync from the My Cloud to the Synology to work. Here is a link to that old post:

Edit to add: Also a search of this subforum comes up with the following discussion which may be relevant:

Hi,

rsync service not shown from the gui on version 5. Rsync is started on the wd i can telnet to port 873 tcp. Also after reboot i populated secret and conf file. They show up in synology as in picture however but cannot finish the backup job. Cannot see why it fails.

Also not sure why it work from command line doing the same feom my syno. Doing direct rsync not ssh so port 873 works fine. I just type username and pw same as in gui.

Any ideas how to troubleshoot?

As suggested previously, you may want to post your issue over in the Synology NAS & SAN support forum as this may be an issue (or limitation) with Synology’s DSM HyperBackup app.

You may want to include your Synology NAS model and DSM version running on it and HyperBackup version.

Hi,

i don’t it is a synology issue aa i can rsync from syno to another syno. I also didnrsyn from syno to debian which works hence question in this forum.

Thanks

Your posts indicate that while using rsync from the command line it works. BUT when using the Synology DSM HyperBackup app on the Synology you have an issue. That would seem to imply an issue with HyperBackup itself trying to access the My Cloud single bay v5.x device. The folks over in the Synology support forum may have additional suggestions on how to proceed.

The single bay My Cloud device is extremely limited with it’s Western Digital custom version of Linux firmware. It is entirely possible it just doesn’t support what you are attempting to do. And instead you may have to use other methods, like mapping the My Cloud to the Synology DSM using Synology’s File Manager and see if HyperBackup can access and backup to the My Cloud device.

There is the following discussion, if you haven’t seen it already, where someone claims HyperBackup worked when using a WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra.

Also, you may need to use the (ETA: My Cloud) default SSH username of “sshd” (without quotes) as well for the rsync username if you are not doing so already.
