MyPassport for MAC - No data visible after only one use

Hi, I purchased a new “My Passport for MAC” to replace a very old external HDD, transferred all data across to the new HDD and the plan was to back this up the next day, but when I came to back up the HDD the following message was displayed.

macOS can’t repair the disk 'My Passport for Mac.
You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can’t save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can.”

The HDD icon is on my desktop and it is also visible in finder but neither show any files, it is if there are now files on the HDD, but when I check the disk via "“About this Mac”, “Storage” it shows that there is 493 GB of data stored.

I have also tried backing up via TimeCapsule but when I check to the back up there is nothing saved.

I don’t expect this problem with a drive which is brand new, but can anybody please help with suggestions of how I can recover my data before I return the disk to WDC. I know someone will say use your old HDD to get the data back but this has since failed too.

Many thanks

How did you format this brand new drive? What filesystem it had before corruption?

Are you able to copy files from it?
