MY PASSPORT ULTRA NOT DETECTED ON macOS SIERRA

Hi!

A couple weeks ago, my macbook (macOS Sierra, version 10.12.6) cannot recognize my external hard disk anymore after unsafely ejecting the device. The hard disk is a “WD My Passport Ultra” in 1 TB. I have tried several options, such as using different USB cables and outlets, different operating systems and I have checked whether I could access my drive on a different location. It does not show up under “disk utility”, but it does show up in “system information > USB”.

Does someone have a solution for this?
Many thanks!

Have you tried using Disk Utility to repair it, or at least check it over?

If you have, here’s a trick.

Shut everything down. Mac, the lot. Unplug everything from the wall socket and count to 30. Plug it all back in again then fire up. Worked for me once, albeit some years ago now.

Yesterday I received a brand new 12TB My Book Duo. After copying the Mac software on it to my Desktop, I tried to use Disk Utility to re-initialise it as HFS+ Extended (journaled) same as my internal drive. Wouldn’t have at first. Kept saying “Unmounting disk - MediaKit reports not enough space on device for requested operation. Operation failed…”.

WD Drive Manager throughout the struggle reported that the new drive was working okay however.

After several attempts, during which time the new drive disappeared off my desktop, I tried re-starting my Mac.

Restarting my Mac didn’t work - so I shut my Mac down completely. Counted to 30, then did fired up from cold (I didn’t get as far as unplugging everything this time though).

This did the trick. The drive now appeared on my desktop and, what’s more, Disk Utility was able to initialise it for use with my iMac.

I had this issue and tried everything. In the end, I discovered that when I used the usb cable that came with my My Book instead of My Passport it worked fine. I tried two different cables that came with My Passport and they both didn’t work (although with one of them it temporarily showed up and then disappeared). My conclussion is that for some reason the cable that comes with My Passport doesn’t work with Sierra (I tried it on two different IMac’s running Sierra) even though it works fine on all other Macs running various different OS. Bizarre, but glad that it was just the cable.
