When I plug the My Passport device into my computer, I can’t access the drive from Windows Explorer - there is no drive letter assigned. Up until yesterday, the device was working properly. When I plugged the device into my computer, it was assigned a drive letter (E) and I was able to store, retrieve and work with the data on the device. Now suddenly, it doesn’t show up in Explorer and I can’t access the device. I’ve checked the disk management on my computer and the My Passport device shows as Disk 1 Unknown, Not Initialized. When I right click and try to initialize the device, the message indicates that the request can not be performed because of an I/O device error. Also, when I right click on Disk 1 and click Properties, the General properties tab indicates the device is working properly - WHEN OBVIOUSLY THIS IS NOT THE CASE! I’ve tried updating the drivers and I have the best driver software available for the device. The device shows in the Computer Management, Disk drives and in the devices and printers but doesn’t show in Windows Explorer. This is a very frustrating situation because I have lots of important data on the My Passport external storage device that is CRITICAL to my daily work activities - and the data is not stored anywhere else which means if I can’t get access to the device, I lost the data. Any suggestions or help with this issue is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
It’s probably beyond do it yourself recovery and will need professinal recovery. Quite often this error is from a problem on one of the circuit boards or the actual drive.
