Hi there, I have a 3TB My Cloud Home, part number WDBVXCOO30 that I have a lot of data on and while I do back it up on USB attached storage, I so rely on remote access. Currently I am aware that there is a system outage that is yet to be resolved and I have never set up ‘local access’ on it. I also have a brand new My Cloud Home 8TB that I bought direct from WD last year that has yet to be set up. That model number begins WDBVCX also.
Two questions please, when I look up OS5 firmware availability for these two units, i.e. model numbers starting WDBVXC*, it states 'Not applicable to OS 5. What exactly does that mean please?
And secondly, I am aware ( or so I am reading ) that these models are not being supported after June 2023. Does that mean they will both be redundant going forward or have I misunderstood that? There is an indication that you can still use third party facilities to access the units. Clearly not something I want to do but even so what is available or should I completely look outside my WD Home Cloud usage?
Thanks everyone in advance!
MyCloud Home (MCH) and OS/5 are COMPLETELY different operating systems.
The MCH products are not designed to run OS/5.
All other WD products today OTHER than the MCH line run OS/5.
They are not inter-compatible.
In general; OS5 hardware is a bit more expensive; and more capable than the MCH line.
Software; while still quite flawed; is also better than MCH software.
Thank you so much for that informed reply. From what you say, would I be recommended to ger rid of my two MCH units ( one’s brand new ) and look at say the WD 8TB My Cloud EX2 Ultra 2-Bay NAS ( seen this on Amazon today )? I’m assuming that would give me the same functionality albeit better? Also, are you able to advise if my two MCH units would actually be redundant after WD talk about support being ended in June this year? Apologies but like many people on here, my technical experience is limited. Cheers
SOOOO - - - I know not much about the MCH; beyond the very limited functionality it has. Like I have mentioned before; I have not previously dived into it’s capabilities beyond “must have constant internet”. To which I said “Nope”.
The first question regarding “what NAS should I have” is “What do you need it to do?”
Do you need local storage for All the computing devices in your home?
- Most NAS units do this. OS5 units are fine for this application. I have a few in my house; They work fine for day-to-day file serving needs. The MCH is (apparently) very limited on the types of transfers and number of users it allows
Do you need internet access to your data when not in your home?
- This is where it gets interesting. OS/5 software has some definate quirks. Not the best by any stretch. I have rolled my own (private VPN); which means I dialed into the units using my own (openVPN) software. Basically; at this point my PC is ON my local network. . .so. . .
Do you mind being snooped on by WD or some other vendor?
- WD does some interesting things with it’s software starting with OS5. Rubbed me the wrong way. Was much happier when I blocked the devices at the router level. At this point - - > It became a local device; and I was much happier.
Do you need plex? WD hardware in general is too underpowered for many basic plex functionality.
In short; for basic Home tasks; I would recommend OS/5 as a low cost solution.
In short; I have in the past NEVER recommended MCH. Not planning to start.
For more complex stuff. . . .I would look elsewhere.
