My Book World Edition with double blinking blue rings

I have a 1 TB unit that appears to have failed I powered it up from resting over an extended holiday.  A bummer to come back to after a nice vacation.

Here are my questions:

Q1:   Are there any management tools for this model to show me the status of the unit?

Q2:  Is this unit RAID 1 by default?

Q3:  If there are no mgmt tools to access the unit, how do I know which drive has failed?

Q4:  How do I recover my data?   Perhaps go the route of http://community.wdc.com/t5/My-Book-World-Edition/1TB-My-Book-World-Edition-Blue-Light-Failure/m-p/41135#M1696

Q5:  How can I go about getting a replacement drive?   It is definitely outside of warranty.   What are my options?   Can I use larger capacity drives in this housing?

Thanks in advance for the help.

If you have the 1tb is must likely a single drive…

The single drive units are slicker as opposed to the dual drive ones…

If you do have the dual drive unit

  1. You can check the status on the network administrator
  2. the unit is raid 1 default
  3. to recover data remove the failed drive and connect to a computer … run an ext3 ( linux ) cd to recover files ( there are other threats on this forum with data recovery suggestions )
  4. if outside of warranty get a new unit… WD has an upgrade program in their website…
  5. the unit might or might not support large capacity units…

Thanks for the quick response.

A few clarifications:

I have opened it up and it is definitely a dual drive unit.

1.  I do not understand what you mean about checking status via network administrator?   The drive is not accessible via the network.

2.  thx.

3.  Since RAID 1, both drives should be same but is one better to start with?

4.  You mean get a new drive or new NAS all together?

more info

1.  I found the web interface to thedrive. Yes, drive A has failed.  Also interesting is that it says the drive is one linear drive and not RAID.  aught oh.  Might only have half my data here.

  1. If one linear drive, it is meaningless on which drive is better since only one drive is going to have data most likely.

thats right…

will need to recover the data on the failed drive and replace
