I have a WD My Book external hard drive that has worked well for years.
Today I see that the unit will not power up.
When I switch on the power to the unit I see a small indicator light that stays on for about 5 to 10 seconds, then goes off.
Normally I see a start up sequence with three or four bar type lights.
Also my PC does not recognize my external hard drive.
Does my unit need to be replaced, and if so, can I retrieve the data that I have stored on it?
The part number is: WDBAAF0010HBK-01.

Connect that external drive to different system and check whether it is behaving same or not. Sometimes it happen when system creates issue in recognizing external drive. If your drive behave same in other system then it is clear that your drive is faulty and need to be replaced. Also, to recover data from any storage device that drive should be recognized by the system.
I would suggest you to try some manual ways to get your drive recognized by the system and then download any data recovery software for getting your data back.
