Just brought a EX4 (with 8Tb) and will be giving my older EX2 (without the disk) to a friend.
Question:
a) can I just plug in my 2 raid 1 3 TB HDD directly into the EX4 without any configuring?

In my opinion there is a chance that if you put the 2 drives inside the new unit and both have the same firmware, there is a chance that you might be able to do RAID roaming, however i have not tried this. Lets see if another user can share some information or tips on this matter so we can make sure you can try this.
Let me do a backup into my ex4 before i do anything- just be on the safe side
