I purchased a My Passport Pro this weekend. I have a number of digital download movies downloaded through iTunes. I copied the movies to the My Passport, and can see them in the My Cloud app file browser, but when I click the movie it opens a safari page with the IP address of the device, but the movie won’t play. I thought I would be able to play these movies on my iPhone since they were purchased with my iTunes account. I have tried changing the file names from m4v to mp4. Is there any way to get these movies to play? Is there a way to connect the TV app to the My Cloud app so that the TV app will see those movies?
I do not think so. You see, back around iOS 8, Apple prevents their DRM protected fils from playing from ANY external drive (whereas they could be before iOS 8). So the MPW or ANY drive is only good for streaming non-Apple protected files. How do you do play non-Apple files? People usually make their own. So what can you do with your Apple movies? Well you likely can copy them to the Apple device you want to play them on ; once on an Apple device they should play fine. But, I am not sure. I have NO Apple DRM files, so all my music and videos play fine to my iPad and iPhone from the MPW or any other storage device I have them on that can stream and I am good to go.
This is just another reason to dislike Apple.
Google around for more info.about this situation. There may be a way to convert the Apple files to non-copy protected videos. If you find a way, let us know.
OK, so I got curious and did your homework for you, and found this link from a well known tech site:
