Hi, I would appreciate your comments on this sound. It‘s my first NAS (Synology DS225+ with two WD Red Plus 8TB) and I have to admit I am quite shocked by the sound. Both drives make the same sound, but I cannot believe that this is normal. It is louder than a PC from 1998.
As you can see, I already put shock absorbers underneath, but it even makes that sound when it is in my hands.
The sound coming from the **Synology DS225+ with two **Western Digital Red Plus 8TB drives is usually normal. NAS hard drives are mechanical and make noticeable clicking or seeking sounds while reading and writing data. In a small NAS enclosure these sounds can seem louder because the chassis transfers the vibration. Using shock absorbers may reduce some vibration, but it will not remove the noise completely because it comes from the internal movement of the drive heads. If both drives make the same steady sound and the NAS is working normally with no SMART errors or performance issues, it is generally nothing to worry about. If the noise becomes very loud, irregular, or you start seeing drive warnings in the system, then the drive health should be checked in the NAS storage manager.
