If the My Book Duo enclosure fails, will hardware encryption render my data irretrievable?

There are hundreds of Amazon reviews and threads on this site with conflicting information. Some of the threads are from 2014 so I’m not sure if things have changed. I even walked to a WD representative via chat and they seemed very confused as to what I was asking about. Here’s my question:

I’m interested in purchasing a My Book Duo 12TB size, WDBFBE0120JBK-NESN

I heard that if the enclosure fails, you CANNOT retrieve the data if you remove the drives and put them in another enclosure. Can someone please verify if this is true as of 12/1/2020? Thank you.

If you enable encryption via the WD software, then yes. Otherwise, I don’t know. The RAID setup will most likely prevent you from accessing files outside of the duo’s enclosure. You may just want to buy a regular My Book if there’s ever a possibility that the drive would ever need to be removed from its enclosure, though I suppose that you want the duo to take advantage of the RAID capabilities.

Thanks for your reply. Aside from the software encryption, which you can enable or not, I believe their is mandatory hardware encryption that will prevent access.
