I/O Device Error / Format Request

Trying to acces the My Passport external drive and it giving me a Request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. Also is asking me to format it.
I have a lot of data saved on it. How can I recover from this erros or the data?

Did you try the tests offered in WD Drive Utilities? Download if you don’t already have it. Might give you more information.
