How to increase the STORAGE on a WD Live TV Hub - my 1TB is already full

Hi there,

I love the device, but have already used up the internal 1TB hard drive that came with the device.  My question is what options do I now have to add more space and to continue to use the product.  I’m not a newbie, but don’t play in this space that often…so any suggestions would be appreciated.  I originally was thinking to USB a WD external HD (say 2/3TB) to my WD TV Live Hub and hope that it would just act as an extension to it’s storage.  But then I just read a descritpion for an 8TB hard drive that works with this WD device…but at the bottom is says that recent WD updates no longer offer a usb external drive to work.  It was on this website.  http://www.icydock.com/icy_tip/559_561_wdtv_media_solution.html

Of coruse I could be easily reading this wrong, but again, I am looking for the best ways to add stoage and keep using the TV hub.  Thanks a ton in advance,  jp

best way depends on how much storage you need

easy way to add storage

  1. buy external usb hdd

connect it directly to your WD Hub

also note the Hub does support USB hubs, so you can attach multiple drives

  1. network storage

either NAS or server, etc …

you have to have a good network, but can easily add 8TB, or 20 TB depending on what you need

  1. external enclosure

the icy dock you mention is an example of this

it all depends on how the enclosure presents the data to the WD

and support would be limited

it’s also important to note that WD has a list of officially supported devices

if your device is NOT on the list, don’t count on any official support

KAD79,

The way you answered the question was exactly what I needed

If I went with option one, and was willing to deal with the limits of an external HDD…do you recommend a brand that works best with this device?  Also, do usb external HDD cap out at 4TB?  Thanks - jp

What I did was buy a 2TB external WD drive and an enclosure for it. I stuck the USB from the enclosure into the USB in the back of the hub, and voila.

pretty much any usb drive should work up to 4TB

although there is an officially supported listed, that you can check out if you like

Also, my two favorites.  They both support 4tb, are fan cooled, USB 3.0 & lower, eSATA II.  Great for loading from your PC then connect to the WD.

Yes, I know that’s unnecessary reconnecting, but transfers are much quicker (large transfers).  IMHO, eSATA seems more sable.
